Previous Participants

“…the course has developed my motivational skills along with the ability to apply myself. I am confident that I now have more to offer the Army and am more effective in my role as a manager, with a better managerial understanding which my department will benefit from. It is rewarding to be able to add such a qualification to my portfolio, which will stand me in good stead for  employment in Civilian Street when the time comes.”

Staff Sergeant Jo McCue
Movement Controller
HQ 2nd Division

“I signed up to the programme, run by Newcastle Business School as I wanted formal accreditation for the management skills I have learned in the army and to help me make the transition to civilian life. Through their online programme, I've gained in depth knowledge about managing and working with people, communications skills and quality control. I left school without any qualifications and have found it invaluable to gain a formal academic qualification through work-based projects. It's exactly what the armed forces need."

What will I study?

Stage One

Business Functions

This module deals with internal and external aspects of the conduct of business organisations, including ‘for profit’ and ‘not for profit’ enterprises, whether in the private sector, the public sector or the voluntary sector.

You will develop an understanding of the different functions and activities which make up an organisation such as marketing, human resource management, operations, finance and supply chain.  The external operating environment will also be analysed considering how organisations affect and are affected by their local, national and international environment.

Managing in Organisations

This module considers contrasting approaches to managing people in organisations.  Looking at different management topics such as culture, structure, power, leadership and teamworking, the module encourages learners to evaluate the suitability, appropriateness and effectiveness of different approaches to management and leadership.

Personal and Study Skills Development

This module is designed to develop a range of personal, intellectual and practical study skills in order to enhance learners individual effectiveness in this and future programmes.

Participants are required to complete an on line study skills audit and identify areas for personal development.

Firstly it focuses on personal finance and managing a budget.  Secondly it looks at company accounts and thirdly the module focuses on enabling managerial decision making through the application of accounting techniques and the provision of relevant financial information.

Work Based Project

This module requires you to complete an individually negotiated 3000 word real-time work-based project that will be of benefit to your service. It will focus on organisational-based issues and seek to develop skills in the diagnosis of problems, research and analysis, development of strategies to address problems, and techniques of presentation.

This module will encourage you to embark on the process of personal, interpersonal and professional knowledge and skills development by evaluating their knowledge, skills and competence in the light of job requirements and personal aspirations.

Achieving Results and Facilitating Change

The module covers principles and methods of managing activities to meet customer requirements, including principles and methods of controlling the use of physical resources, ensuring quality and managing the process of change.  Emphasis will be made on recommending and supporting improvements to existing operational activities and plans.

Managing and Developing Others

This module is intended to develop your ability to understand and develop relationships with colleagues at work.  It aims to introduce a range of human resource management processes, procedures and underpinning theories for working with and managing people, and to encourage you to apply these to your own personal and organisational experiences in order to identify areas for improving practice.

Management in Practice (Work-based Project)

This module encourages links between knowledge studied on the programme to date with actual working practice. It also seeks to raise your awareness of the workplace as a learning environment. The module will enable you to extend your knowledge of business and management in specified functional areas, and to employ your intellectual and practical skills in an organisational context.

The module will be assessed by an organisation proposal and analysis report, a workplace progress review report, and an individual personal development plan and report.

Stage Three

Understanding Strategy

This module is intended to develop your awareness and critical evaluation of strategic management by assessing the impact of the business environment on organisations.  The nature of practicing strategy will be evaluated by reviewing the tools and activities involved when formulating strategies.

The concept of corporate social responsibility will be central when discussing the above topics by assessing the role of stakeholders in organisations.  Case studies describing practical examples of formulating strategies in organisations will play a major role in your learning process.

Leadership

Being able to lead, develop and support individuals and teams is vital in enabling others to maximise their contribution, and for achievement of the organisation’s vision. This is the focus of this module. It aims to consolidate and develop your understanding of the theories and principles of effective leadership and examine the differences between management and leadership. The module will help you appreciate the issues and complexities involved in leading, and how this is related to successful implementation of business strategy. The module will enable you to reflect on your role as a leader of others and enhance your understanding of the importance of effective delegation, motivation, and development of employees.

This module is intended to develop your understanding of contemporary issues in management and organisational behaviour and subsequent ability to understand the process of change from the identification of the signal for change to the design and implementation of a change strategy.

The role of group working, transformational leadership and knowledge sharing in leading and managing change including reducing stress and creating a climate for innovation will be emphasised as well as the importance of developing a strategy to support the change throughout the life of the change strategy.

Professional Project

The integrative project will draw on your learning from each of the programme’s modules.  It will focus on a contemporary business/leadership issue and seek to develop research and leadership skills in considering the wider implications of this issue for the organisation.

Learning and Assessment

All modules encourage reflection on existing work based practice and identification of work based service improvement.  All assessment is designed to encourage improved practice in the workplace whilst also preparing for future studies at postgraduate and professional level.

With a choice of study content within a structured framework, the programme uses a combination of teaching and learning materials and techniques including:

  • Self-study materials, providing knowledge and understanding, and helping you to apply ideas to the workplace.
  • Work-based assignments that give you an opportunity to develop and demonstrate your knowledge and understanding and provide evidence of competence.
  • Personal and organisational development plans which focus on issues of specific interest to you.
  • On line workshops and tutorials where you are invited to share insights and management experience.

Self-study workbooks are available online, with a CD-ROM version also being provided. These materials enable you to study at a pace that suits your own individual circumstances.  The programme is assessed through a variety of work-based assignments rather than formal examinations. These assignments involve a number of learning activities encouraging self-reflection as well as the investigation and analysis of workplace situations.
